First let’s define what a podcast is.
A podcast is basically an audio distributed on the internet. Like blogs, where people can subscribe and know when there is a new update, then they have the option to download and listen to it on their computer and save it on their iPod, mp3 players etc.
How does it work?
The term podcast came from the combination of the words portable and broadcast hence portable broadcasting is podcasting. Users can download audio files and listen to them and transfer them anytime. Listeners can use real players or any media player to hear streaming audio in real time or downloaded files. Imagine the music or songs you download and transfer on your music player. It’s basically like that, the only differences is that the podcast is not a music file. It can be lecture, conversation, webinar or basically someone talking about something.
How to make a podcast?
Making a podcast is as easy as downloading one if you’re to ask on the process itself. To make one, you just record your audio content with your voice or anyone’s, add music or effects if desired and then upload the audio file to your website or to another hosting location like iTunes, odeo etc. People can now download it and listen.

1. Branding – Podcasts can be a strong tool for your company’s branding. If your product is related to food and cooking, you can have an audio session where you will give weekly tips and new recipes. You can also incorporate it in your advertising campaign as a support like if you have a TV ad, you can make an audio extension via podcast. One tree hill. The hit TV show incorporated podcasting on their marketing when viewers were allowed to download each of the character’s podcast. The content features the characters giving an insightful and reflective (journal type) talk about something. It became a hit especially to the fans. Viewers then look forward to the weekly podcast updates.
2. Relationship building –your business can build relationship by giving out free podcast which contain content that will be beneficial to them like tips, tutorials and uploaded webinars about a certain topic.

Johnson and Johnson created a 5 episode audio talk targeting teens. The show was hosted by said two teens called “Heather and Janelle.” Initial podcast branding of Acuvue was very subtle but was more direct on the last episode. Results were overwhelming that the 5 episode turned into a 5 month project.
It is important to note that creating the podcast is not enough. Promoting and distributing it is another factor. Tracking the result is also another important factor. You can measure the number of downloads. For your promotion, here are some tips you can use:
1. Submit your podcasts to directories and search engines.
2. Feature and highlight them on your website. Also make sure they are easily accessible and downloadable.
3. Research other sites, bloggers, orgs that might contribute to your podcast and promote it to them.
4. Offer them as a free content on the web.
5. Send out a press release about it.
