When was the last time you sent an e-mail?

It maybe this morning, last night or just a few minutes ago. Email has become a part of our life just as the landline and mobile telephone. Today it is not just an optional tool that we can use but already the most used way of communication in businesses. A study indicated that some 250 million emails flood inboxes everyday and this is expected to erupt even more by 2012. This is why email marketing has been one of the many options of brands, businesses and marketers alike. Not only is it affordable but it is also very easy to execute.

But what exactly is email marketing?

E-mail marketing as the name suggests is using e-mail as a marketing tool. This refers to your direct promotional emails that you send to other people. The brochures and other product related content like a coupon that you send to your members, subscribers and the like. And yes this also included placing your content or ad in other people’s messages.

The basic rule of email marketing is to have a good content or a good email message. And good email messages start with the right subject lines, form, good content, calls to action and a link to your website. When done the right way, email marketing can be an affordable and effective marketing tool for your business. But the question is….

How do you create an effective email marketing content?

Here are basic practices that you can follow:

  • A very important thing that you should always remember in email marketing is including a link to unsubscribe or opt out with a single click. This is responsible marketing. You will need an email address owner’s permission before you can send them a commercial email or else they will treat your email is spam. This is why database generations like event registrations and voluntary website registration is a must.
  • Always include a signature block where your name, company and contact number is written.
  • Proofread everything from addresses, subject lines to content until your signature. Sending an email even with just a tiny mistake will reflect on your company and business.
  • Provide a link to your privacy policy.
  • For those subscribed to your newsletter, tell them how often the newsletters will arrive.
  • Include a link to forward and share the email newsletter to a subscriber’s friend.
  • Post sample newsletters and press releases that to your website for potential subscribers to preview what they will receive to avoid future troubles.
  • On your website where your subscription form is located, put your privacy policy and other subscribing details like benefits, notice etc.
  • Send a welcome and thank you message to your subscribers.
  • Remember to include, once in a while a coupon as a reward and recognition to your subscribers.
  • Don’t forget to acknowledge and save praises on your newsletters and press releases.
