Do you really know what you’re doing with social media?

Define your Company’s Social Media Strategy

Pop quiz, a new employee in your company, maybe even your new boss or higher up, comes to you and wants to know what your social media strategy is. Do you have a valid answer that you can provide? Do you really know what you’re doing with social media? Do you know how effective or ineffective you’ve been, and do you know what direction you would like to be heading in the future? You better figure out what your real strategy is, or else you’re just wasting time and energy with your presence on the social networks.

What are you Actually Doing with Social Media?

All too often people don’t really know what they are doing with all of the social media efforts they are making. They just are ready to proclaim to the world, “Hey, check it out, we’re on Facebook and Twitter and MySpace and everywhere else too! Isn’t that awesome!” Well, it could be potentially great for your business, but it won’t be much of anything if you don’t know what your actual strategy is, and why you’re spending all of that time and effort on these services to begin with.

Like all other aspects to an effective business, social media needs a real strategy and a solid game plan in order to succeed. If you don’t know what you’re supposed to be doing, how you’re supposed to measure your success, what kinds of results you’re trying to achieve, what kind of responses you’re looking for, or anything else, then what’s the point? If you want to do more than just proclaim, “we’re on Facebook!” then you better develop a rock solid strategy and game plan.

Creating a Real Social Media Strategy

Alright, so you’ve probably realized that your social media efforts and outreach need an upgrade, at the least. You need to actually know what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it. So how are you supposed to actually get started with this, when you’ve basically had a blank slate up until this point?

The first thing you need to think about are the goals you’re looking to accomplish with your social media. Are you trying to grow awareness about a new product launch or website? Are you trying to increase sales 20% by the end of the year? Do you want to find 5 new prospects per week exclusively from your social media efforts? Whatever it is, you need a goal so you can take actions that are working towards achieving it.

From there, you need to figure out a way to quantify your goal, so you can measure your progress, track your results, and improve your tactics. All goals need to be specific, measurable and realistic so you can do this, otherwise once again you’re floundering away without really knowing what you’re doing or where you’re going.

Everyone’s social media strategy is going to be different, but it all needs to start from the same place, and that’s the goals you’re bringing to the table. First think of your goals, then find a way to measure and quantify them, and then build a strategy to match. When you do this, you’ll greatly improve your social media efforts.
